Course Preview
This short courses are intended to provide an intensive introduction to map reading plus the interpretation of contours and mountain relief.
Previous Experience
No previous knowledge of use of map and compass is assumed but some basic map reading knowledge is useful. Some summer hill walking skills are necessary plus a good level of personal fitness.
Course Details
Basic understanding of maps, Map Orientation, Grid References & keys. Understanding contour lines and interpretation of relief in hilly or mountainous country. Using a compass & taking bearings. Basic Route planning and route cards. Naismth's rule. Personal Pacing and measuring

Winter Mountain Navigation- includes Night Navigation Exercise. Level 2

Course Preview
These navigation courses are directed towards those who wish to be able to navigate more confidently in more challenging terrain and weather conditions all year round in the UK.
Previous Experience
Those coming on this level of navigation course will already have at least a basic knowledge and competence in map & compass work as well as summer hill walking experience. A good level of personal hill fitness is assumed
Course Details
Revision of understanding maps & keys, grid references.
Competancy in reading, understanding & interpretation of contour lines & map relief.
Using a compass with accuracy and confidence
More advanced route planning and route cards. Naismths rule.
Pacing and measuring distances on different terrain & effects of varying weather.
Resections,
Relocation skills. Transects & boxing.
Navigation techniques in bad weather / poor visibility / night navigation
