Intermediate Inland kayak ~ Introduction to Moving Water courses are aimed at folk who have already done some kayak paddling before and have mastered the basics - maybe some time ago, and who wish to progress their existing basic skills. We will concentrate on the more advanced skills with the emphasis on improving specific skills, performance and your techniques on easy moving water.
Previous experience required: Some previous experience necessary, ideally you should be at least BCU 2* level and be in the process of consolidating your skills. A reasonable level of personal fitness is required and some previous experience of paddling journeys on lochs, canals or simple rivers.
Course Itinerary.                                                                                                                                          The courses to intermediate level will provide: -

  • Consolidation of the efficient technical paddling skills needed for this level of kayaking to the level of the  syllabus of BCU 3* or 4* Inland Kayak Award;
  • Ensure that paddlers have sufficient personal experience and technical expertise to paddle a  predetermined route on flat water competently and undertake a simple day journey as part of group.
  • Consolidation of moving water skills in both kayak / open canoes on a full day river or loch trip. (Grade 1).
  • Introduction to white water skills. (Grade 1-2). We will look at river features, breaking in and out of  the current, ferry gliding, reading the water, communication afloat, equipment, and safety matters  including the use of throw bags.   
  • Ensure that paddlers can use safety procedures and rescue techniques effectively in an open water  situation; use of tow lines; the ability to deal with simple first aid incidents; awareness and the ability  to recognise and deal with immersion hypothermia; lifting and carrying techniques.    
  • Introduction to the progression of rolling.  
  • A 5-day course includes an over night camp or bothie expedition or longer day tour with a further  progression of skills including navigation & route finding.       
  • Involvement in journeys planning, leadership & decision making – access, weather forecasting, shuttling.


Objectives & Opportunity: - There will be the opportunity to be assessed for a suitable Rainbow Award, BCU 3* & 4* Awards.
Minimum Age 14 (from 12 years upward with family group unless otherwise agreed)

Intermediate Open Canadian Canoe ~ Introduction to Moving Water courses are aimed at folk who have already done some open canoe paddling before and have mastered the basics - maybe some time ago, and who wish to progress their existing basic skills. We will concentrate on the more advanced skills with the emphasis on improving specific skills, performance and your techniques on easy moving water.
Previous experience required: Some previous experience necessary, ideally you should be at least 2* level and be in the process of consolidating your skills. A reasonable level of personal fitness is required and some previous experience of paddling journeys on lochs, canals or simple rivers.
Course Itinerary. The course to intermediate level will provide: -

  •  Consolidation of the technical skills needed for this level of kayaking to the level of the syllabus of  BCU 3* or 4* Open Canoe Award with the practical application of strokes and techniques for moving  water and exposed open water in variable conditions.
  • Ensure that paddlers have sufficient personal experience and technical expertise to paddle a pre - determined route on flat water competently and undertake a simple day journey as part of group.
  •  Consolidation of moving water skills in both open canoes on a full day river or loch trip (Grade 2).
  •  Introduction to white water skills. (Grade 1-2). We will look at river features, breaking in and out of the  current, ferry gliding, reading the water, communication afloat, equipment, and safety matters.
  •  Ensure that paddlers can use safety procedures and deep water rescue techniques effectively in an open  water; be able to deal with simple first aid incidents; be able to undertake towing systems.                  
  • An opportunity to practice the use of throw lines, lining & tracking, poling & snubbing, portaging     
  • On the 5-day course an over night camp or bothie expedition or longer day tour is included with a further  progression of skills.   
  •  Involvement in journeys planning, leadership & decision making.

INTRODUCTION TO WHITE WATER
White Water River Day Tours & Skills Courses ~ Kayak
1 & 2 days

The course is for paddlers who would like a specific structured introduction to moving water & white water skills or who wish to improve and upgrade their technical skills. Most coaching will take place on Grade I-II and perhaps easy Grade III water.
Previous experience: - Ideally students should ideally be at a level of and have the skills for BCU 3-4*. You should be reasonably paddling fit and able to control a kayak effectively on flat water. An elementary knowledge or rolling is preferred.
Course Itinerary: The course will provide: -

  • Coaching in personal paddling skills at BCU 3-4* level;
  • Rolling coaching in kayaks;
  • Basic moving water & white water skills to include reading & understanding white water; boat  positioning, strokes & paddling skills; basic stopper techniques;
  • High crosses
  • Eddying in and out
  • Surfing waves and stoppers
  • River and general water safety;
  • Evaluation of suitable equipment and clothing;
  • Basic white water rescue and safety techniques; White water hazards;
  • Basics of white water journey planning.
  • White water grading


Course Objectives: By the end of the course students should feel confident and be competent on at least Grade II water; be able to do a prepared roll in cold water (if they could already roll or at least be very near being ready to roll). By the end of the course there will be an opportunity for students to be assessed for BCU 3* or 4* Awards if they wish to do so.

RAPID RIVER PADDLING
Intermediate White Water White Water Grade 2-3
2 day w/e, 3 or 5 days
Ratio 1:4

This course is aimed at paddlers who have already paddled on Grade 11 water.
Previous experience required: Students should already be able to roll even if only in a pool. They should be paddling fit at least up to Grade11.
The aim of the course is to give an ideal opportunity to; - give paddlers the personal skills and technical knowledge to be able to competently paddle simple Grade III water and sample more challenging water.
Course Itinerary-The syllabus will cover in depth:

  • Reading and understanding white water
  • Using & reading white water features;
  • Coaching on an individual basis of white water paddling skills;
  • Boat positioning;
  • Rolling in white water;
  • Planning white water journeys;
  • Inspecting and scouting techniques for running wild rivers;
  • White water rescue and safety,
  • Pre-protection of rapids and river leadership.
    Minimum Age 16 years

ROUGH WATER PADDLING                                                                                                                    Advanced River Kayak Skills Courses & Tours ~ White Water Grade 3-5
 2-day w/e, 3 – 5 days

This course is more of a fun paddling week on the best white water rivers in Scotland, during the spring & autumn when river levels are (usually) at their best.
Previous experience required: Paddlers should be competent at Grade III and able to roll reliably in moving water.
Course Itinerary: This is an ideal way for a small group, club or individuals to enjoy white water paddling while upgrading their personal skills. Rivers used will depend on water levels and the personal abilities of the group
The course will cover all the necessary aspects of advanced white water training.
