Previous Experience |Prior map reading knowledge is essential plus outdoor experience and some fitness of mountain walking or paddling. Participants should have confidence in the skills required in Level 1 & 2 in at least open moorland, forests, open countryside and hills.
Course Itinerary | A very thorough consolidation of mountain & micro navigation will be given through mainly practical sessions both indoors, locally and "on the hill". A night navigation exercise and / or orienteering is included.
Course Content | Topics to be covered will include:
- In addition to the basic map reading & navigational skills at Level 1 & 2:
- Consolidate the navigational skills learnt at Mountain Navigation Level 2
- The use of contours to identify land forms – hill tops; valleys; re-entrants; spurs; knolls and use these to map read as a main method of navigation
- Identify & use land forms (ridges; valleys; the size, location and direction of contour features) to micro navigate to identified locations
- In more complicated landscapes use judgement of distance, compass skills, & continuous checking (map to ground and ground to map skills & techniques
- Plan a safe mountain walk in open or hilly country within specific timescales, terrain difficulty & objective
- Appreciation and understanding of the physical, mental and navigational demands in hilly, moorland and mountain environments, in poor and extreme weather, the duration of daylight hours.
- Understand and address the effects of fatigue, potential hypothermic conditions (the effects of heat, wind, cold, wet on the human body) on decision making processes and keeping to a selected route.
